Vapor Pressures and Enthalpies of Sublimation of Ten Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Determined via the Knudsen Effusion Method
نویسندگان
چکیده
The vapor pressures of ten polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ranging in molecular weight from (152 to 252) g ·mol, were measured using the Knudsen effusion technique in the temperature range of (297 to 432) K. These compounds included those for which there were few or conflicting data in the literature: acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]phenanthrene, 9,10-benzophenanthrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and perylene. Anthracene, fluorene, and pyrene were also examined to establish the reliability of the presently implemented method. Enthalpies of sublimation of these compounds were determined via application of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation.

Vapor pressures and thermodynamics of oxygen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons measured using Knudsen effusion.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygenated derivatives (OPAHs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants resulting from the incomplete combustion of coal and fossil fuels. Their vapor pressures are key thermodynamic data essential for modeling fate and transport within the environment. The present study involved nine PAHs containing oxygen heteroatoms, including aldehyde, carbox...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are ubiquitous pollutants resulting from incomplete combustion and many fuel processing and storage operations. They are encountered in the environment in many forms, ranging from non-aqueous phase liquid and/or solid mixtures (i.e., NAPL and NAPS materials), to dissolved aqueous phase components, to adsorbed species on solid surfaces. The present work con...
متن کاملMeasurement of temperature dependence for the vapor pressures of twenty-six polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in commercial Kanechlor mixtures by the Knudsen effusion method.
The vapor pressures of the major congeners in commercial polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixtures (Kanechlors; Kanebuchi Chemical Industry, Tokyo, Japan) have been experimentally determined by Knudsen mass loss effusion. We obtained vapor pressures for the individual PCBs in the crystalline solid, liquid, and subcooled liquid forms as a function of temperature. We derived the thermodynamic param...

The vaporization enthalpies and liquid vapor pressures from T ) 298.15 K to T ) 510 K of a series of polyaromatic hydrocarbons have been measured by correlation-gas chromatography. The vaporization enthalpies measured in kJ ·mol include: biphenylene (66.4 ( 1.7), fluorene (72.4 ( 1.7), 1-methylfluorene (77.2 ( 3.6), 2-phenylindene (84.3 ( 0.7), 1-, 2-, 9-methylanthracene (87.0 ( 1.0, 84.5 ( 2.7...
متن کاملVapor pressure of ten polychlorinated biphenyl congeners and two commercial fluids as a function of temperature.
The Knudsen mass-loss effusion technique was used to measure the vapor pressures of commercial Kanechlor fluids (Kanechlor 300 and Kanechlor 500) and 10 major individual polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Kanechlors as a function of temperature and ortho-chlorine substitution. From the temperature dependence of vapor pressure, the thermodynamic parameters, such as enthalpies and entropies of s...
